Product design personal statement

Everything in life has the ability to be improved. Whether it’s to help the environment, the function or even someone’s quality of life. From a young age, I have always been known by my friends and family as an expert in these analytical thoughts, and I have always been passionate in coming up with solutions to these problems.

I have always been fascinated with innovation, creating inventions in my garden and around the home. This developed into a keen eye for design and creativity as well as increasing numbers of visits to the design museums as well as subscriptions to a monthly design magazine. It is in the latter where I have read about architecture and the latest innovations in materials, processes and form. One of my favourite items in the magazine is a section called ‘crime against design’ where each month they analyse designs in society and how they have failed, such as the new London bin design and the impact of micro-polymers on the environment.

Since year seven, design and technology has always been my favoured subject. It was no question to progress my studies through GCSE and then A-level (along with psychology, physics and core maths). I regularly support the Design department, discussing the subject with new potential students and their families, sharing my love of this fascinating subject. I am also a member of the student leadership team and have embraced the many opportunities this has brought, including: running charity events; supporting the local community (even appearing on local news) and supporting the college in all open events. Along with school life I am currently employed part-time at my local Waitrose branch. I enjoy photography and currently I am working towards my grade five on the saxophone. Balancing these interests with my studies and work responsibilities has helped me become more organised and better at goal-setting and planning.

Last year, I had the amazing opportunity of completing a two-week work experience placement for a company called Techlink. Techlink are a company that have designed hundreds of products, including furniture stocked by John Lewis, portable battery packs for Apple and also their own range of computer and mobile accessories. My brief whilst at Techlink was to come up with a concept for portable battery pack that could accommodate a range of phones. From this brief I conceptualised, developed, modelled and rendered my ideas, all the way from concept to delivery. This two week work placement was invaluable for me as it provided me with experience with Solidworks, rendering software and 3D printing. It also provided the experience of working in a design office environment and receiving feedback on from successful designers. This experience confirmed my beliefs that design is the subject that I would love to continue at degree level and into a career.

Perhaps my greatest accomplishment so far is that I was a member of the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Junior Board. I was hand selected from over three hundred applicants to be part of this team of eight members. This involved sitting quarterly in board meetings with the managing directors, marketing leaders and creative developers of the company. We would discuss the running of the business, creative ideas on how to help support the company and I was allowed to share my ideas for a successful business. This lead to a meeting with the team of merchandise designers at the theme park, whereupon one of my ideas was put into production and is now on the market. A great achievement for me.

I am eager to expand my knowledge of product design to degree level and into a career and I feel that a place at your university would be a great step in the pathway to my success.
